"Ruby Rebelle" is the first release from the Bayou Gotham music series — a passion project where each of our hot sauces gets its own original track and animated video rooted in New Orleans culture, history, and heat.
Ruby Rebelle hails from Storyville, the infamous red-light district that operated in New Orleans from 1897 to 1917. It was a place where jazz flourished in upscale brothels, where Jelly Roll Morton played piano and a young Louis Armstrong hauled coal to the saloons, soaking up the music that would change the world.
Virtue and vice. Sinners and saints. That tension is the secret ingredient in Ruby Rebelle — both the sauce and the song.
The track is a slow-burn blues number told from the perspective of a willing victim. He sees the danger in her smile. He knows she'll steal his heart and rob him blind. And he's not leaving Storyville tonight.
